2008
Well, we are getting ready for this year and wanted to give a listing of the competitions we are looking to attend. We hope that
you can join us or drop in at a competition. I promise we will let you sample some BBQ.
Bedford Blues and BBQ: April 19 Bedford, Virginia
It
was great to finally get started with the competition season at Bedford. We use this contest to get ready for the bigger events
in the year. The same faces were their this year and we had a good time catching up with the other teams. They decided
to add pulled pork to the contest this year so we got their early on Saturday morning to start cooking. Everything went well
with good crowd participation. We are looking forward to the next one. This is a winner takes all event. We won
ribs and chicken.

Pigs in the Park: May 16-17 Danville, Virginia
We were really looking forward to Danville this year. We had such a great time
last year at this competition and met a lot of great people. It turned out to be two beautiful days and we had a great time.
We were suprised with our award in Brisket and did well in the Anything But category. We are getting more organized and understanding
what needs to happen at these competitions. We improved in some categories and fell in others. We are looking to put it
all together in July. There were 54 teams competing this year and only 46 last year. We are already looking forward to
next year.

Que and Cruz July 18-19 Louisa, Virginia
We were excited about Que and Cruz because we knew the person in charge of the competition
(Bill Small) and that it was pretty close to home. Bill Small is a team member of My side of the Mountain. We first met
Bill and Gary at Danville last year and ever since they have been a big help. We got a great spot under some nice big trees
and large spots with water and electric at each one. There were 36 teams competing in the first year of the contest. We
had many family and friends come to this one and gave us support. Cledus was playing games with us at this comp.
Our brisket and boston butts got done way to early and the ribs did not cook fast enough. Chicken turned out very good and it
showed in the awards ceremony. This was a great run competition and we have told Bill to reserve the same spot for next year.

Pickin in the Panhandle: Sept. 5-6 Martinsburg, WV
Heading to WV to compete and have fun. This was our last competition
of 2008 and we were ready to go. We had some new techniques to try and felt good about our BBQ. We found out that there
was going to be some big name teams there like Mike Davis with Lotta Bull. He had a real big RV with his logo plastered all
over it. Well, we got to Qing and over the night it started to rain and kept raining until we left. This ended up being
our worst showing. You never know what the judges are going to like. We were suprised at our chicken placement because
of the 5th place walk at Que and Cruz. We didn't get a walk, but learned some lessons and will be ready to go next year.
It seems that we do not do well out of state. I think next year will be all in state comps.
