Bedford Blues and BBQ: April 20-21 Bedford, Virginia
Well, we dove right in to our first competition. This event was not sanctioned
by KCBS. It's an annual festival put on by the town of Bedford, Virginia, and incorporates a BBQ cook-off for the crowd. We cooked
Ribs, Chicken, and participated in the Peoples' Choice category. There were six teams for the event and it was a great way to get
our feet wet. We met a lot of great people including Mike from The Pigs Ear and the guys from the Part Time Party Porkers. We learned
a lot at this competition and got great feedback from the Peoples' Choice. This event was a "winner takes all" event. We won Best
Spirit, and we walked away with new friends and great experience.

Pigs in the Park: May 18-19 Danville, Virginia
This
was our first KCBS competition, and we were really excited and nervous coming into this event. There were 46 teams competing at this
event, including some big names. It was good to see some familiar faces from Bedford. Of course, we met more good people here. Thanks
for all the pointers that Red, White and Que gave us here. We also met Bill and Gary from My Side of the Mountain (Thanks for the
help and sorry we didn't have any chili left over). We entered all four main categories (Brisket, Pork, Ribs, and Chicken) and entered
the Anything But category with Jambalaya. We also entered their Chili Cookoff event, which we are happy to say is now "award-winning".
Overall, a great experience and definitly a learning experience. We'll be back next year for this wonderful event.

2nd Annual Chesapeake Bay Cookoff:
July 27-28 Stevensville, Maryland
We were really looking forward to this event, since we had a couple of months since Danville. This
time, we competed in just the four main categories so we could concentrate on the BBQ. There were 40 teams in this event, which was
great. As always, we met some great people, from Pork Shank Redemption and 3EyzBBQ. It turned out to be a very hot day and the rain
just before sunset made it very humid. Needless to say, John and I did not get much sleep. All our stuff came off great, and we were
in high spirits going into the awards ceremony. We did not get a call and fell in the middle of the pack on just about everything.
It was disappointing, but we had a great time and are ready for our next adventure in our quest for better BBQ.

We picked up this event at the last minute. John couldn’t make it, so I had to solicit a volunteer. Michael Hock is his name and
volunteering is his game. Michael was a big help, and the walk he had to turn in the competition boxes was quite a journey. I think
he’s hooked, and we look forward to him coming to other competitions with us. I couldn’t have done it without him. The pictures can’t
really show you how pretty the area was, but at least you’ll get an idea. We knew a few of the teams. My Side of the Mountain, The
Pigs Ear and 3EYZ were all ready to compete. There were 23 teams in the professional division (which we’re in) and about 14 backyard
division teams. Saturday was so hot, we felt like we were being smoked! A lot of people showed up for the awesome Bluegrass bands.
The people were great; the competition was fun; the whole thing was a blast!
